Translated By Chiao

During the Five Dynasties (707-960), Zheng En was engaged to a melon-keeper named Tao Sanchun. When Emperor Shizong of Zhou Dynasty Chai Rong ascended the throne, Zhao Kuangyin and Zheng En were upgraded to dignitaries and Tao Sanchun was permitted to marry Zheng En in the capital city.

Since Zheng En was afraid of Tao Sanchun on account of her excellent fighting skills, he, together with Zhao Kuangyin, arranged a general named Gao Huaide to stop her on the way.

Tao Sanchun first defeated Gao Huaide, then fought all the way to the emperor’s throne room, and finally beat up Zheng En at the bridal chamber.

Chai Rong and Zhao Kuangyin rushed over to make peace between them.

Tao Sanchun, then, chose Zheng En’s oil-selling bangzi (opera) as the family rules to warn him to never forget his origin.

Zheng En then knelt down and admitted his mistake, and the couple was reconciled.

Tao Sanchun was honored as First-Class Brave Lady by Chai Rong and was allowed to participate in the administration and discussion of state affairs.
