In the Kangxi 8th year of Qing Dynasty (1669), Wang Zhihe, a jvren (provincial graduate) of Anhui Province, came to the capital city to take the metropolitan examination. He was confident in himself and was determined to score high amongst his peers. His official career, however, was unfortunate and he was thus stranded in the capital. Thanks to handyman Mr. Han and his daughter at the guild, he resumed his toufu business to make a living and to keep preparing for the exam. Bumpy as his official career may be, Wang Zhihe managed to find a new goal of life and finally understood the true meaning of Huizhou merchants’ philosophy of supporting Confucianism through doing business. In the Kangxi 17th year of Qing Dynasty (1678), Nanjiang Yuan entered the state of history at Yanshou Temple Street outside the Beijing Front Entry. From then on, the imperial court was short for an official that was mediocre, while the Chinese nation was added a time-honored brand that is named Wang Zhihe.
